EuroScholars Awards

For the academic year 2011-2012, the EuroScholars program will offer several EuroScholars Awards in the amount of € 500 each. All participants with a 3.5 GPA and higher are eligible and automatically considered for an award upon acceptance to a EuroScholars research project. There is no additional application required.

 

Institutional Awards

A number of Institutional Awards up to €2,000 each are available at a number of European Host Institutions. There is no additional application required. The Host Institutions each have their own selection procedure.

The Gilman Scholarship Fund
The Gilman International Scholarship Program offers a competition for awards for undergraduate study abroad. Awards of up to $5,000 are made for U.S. citizen undergraduates to study abroad. Award amounts will vary depending on the length of study and student need with the average award being $4,000. 
Eligibility: For any U.S. citizen in good academic standing and who is taking part in any credit-bearing study abroad program for up to one academic year. Student must demonstrate financial need; students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a 2-year or 4-year undergraduate college or university are eligible to apply. IIEPassport Study Abroad Directories, a joint project between the Institute of International Education and EducationDynamics, provides an online directory of study abroad funding scholarships and grants searchable by country or subject.

Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grant
There are forty-five $1,000 grants awarded each year to help support undergraduate study abroad. The grant is open to Phi Kappa Phi members as well as non-members in all fields of study. Student must attend an institution with a Phi Kappa Phi chapter, have a cumulative GPA of 3.5/4.0 and have a minimum of 30 and a maximum of 90 credit hours completed. Study abroad program must commence in May and end in June of the following year. Applicants must submit a letter of acceptance into the study abroad program and have at least two semesters remaining at the home institution after the completion of the study abroad program. Foundation for Global Scholars
The Foundation for Global Scholars is a 501C(3) non-profit organization which provides scholarships for students studying abroad throughout the world. In each academic year, the Foundation awards more than $300,000 in scholarships and grants to help students who may otherwise be unable to study abroad and ensure that students have an affordable international experience.

The Whitaker Foundation
The Whitaker International Program sends emerging leaders in U.S. biomedical engineering (or bioengineering) overseas to undertake a self-designed project that will enhance their careers within the field.

Most European Countries in which the EuroScholars program is offered, have a nationwide organisation that promotes higher education in that country. They may also provide scholarships for international students.

German Academic Exchange Service: DAAD
The DAAD has a office in New York, founded in 1971, to support academic exchange between the US, Canada and Germany. DAAD has two information centers dedicated to serving the needs of students and faculty on the west coast of the United States and in Canada. They promote study and research in Germany, advise local students on funding opportunities, and build ties between German and US or Canadian universities.

DAAD Undergraduate Scholarships for Research and/or Internships in Germany

Highly qualified undergraduate students are invited to apply for scholarships funding study, senior thesis research and/or internships in Germany. The goal of this program is to support study abroad in Germany and at German universities. Preference will be given to students whose projects or programs are based at and organized by a German university.

Swiss Governmental Scholarships
The Swiss Government offers scholarships to foreign students and artists on the basis of reciprocity or within the frame of a scholarship pool to several countries. Scholarships are granted to postgraduate candidates from both industrial and developing countries.

Swiss University Scholarships
To find out whether Swiss universities offer scholarships to foreign students, we recommend checking with the International Relations Department of the Swiss universities - University of Geneva and University of Zurich.

ThinkSwiss Research Scholarship
ThinkSwiss offers 15 scholarships for a research stay in Switzerland. It supports highly motivated and qualified U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to do research at a public Swiss university or research institute for 2 to 3 months. The scholarship is open to students of all fields. The ThinkSwiss Research Scholarship program provides a monthly scholarship of CHF 1,050 (approx. USD 1,000) for a period of 2 to 3 months (CHF 3,150 maximum), which covers two thirds of the average student’s living costs.

Requirements:
To apply for a ThinkSwiss Research Scholarship, you must:
  • Be currently enrolled at an accredited U.S. university/college
  • Be a graduate student or an undergraduate student who will have completed your sophomore year by the time the research stay in Switzerland begins
  • Provide a written confirmation from a professor at a Swiss university that he/she will accept you for a research stay in his/her group
